Claire joined Bernstein & Associates in 2015. She holds a B.A. in Anthropology from Scripps College, and an M.S. in Museum and Field Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder.  She has worked extensively with anthropological collections at museums in Colorado and Washington.

For her Master’s project at the University of Colorado, she developed and facilitated a two-day training for undergraduate and graduate students on the NAGPRA consultation project.

In 2003, Jan founded Bernstein & Associates to help clients implement NAGPRA. In the 1980s, half a decade before the passage of NAGPRA, she worked on a project for the California Department of Parks and Recreation that laid the groundwork for the eventual repatriation of the Native American human remains and cultural items under the State of California’s control.

Since the passage of NAGPRA, Jan has worked with Indian tribes, Native Hawaiian organizations, Alaska Native Villages, museums, municipalities, and state and federal agencies on all aspects of NAGPRA implementation. The projects have resulted in the repatriation of the remains of thousands of ancestors and cultural items. NAGPRA Consultation/ Documentation and Repatriation grants written by Jan funded many of the projects.

Jan is on the faculty of the National Preservation Institute and is an instructor for the National NAGPRA Program. She holds a B.A. in Art and Art History from California State University Sacramento and an M.S. in Museum and Field Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

We envision the possibilities, effectively organize ideas into actions, and follow through to project completion with sensitivity and commitment.
